Wisdom teeth extraction

Many Anchorage, Alaska residents are faced with the decision to remove their wisdom teeth. Wisdom tooth removal is suggested either to correct a problem (i.e. crowding) or to prevent problems that regularly occur with wisdom teeth if allowed to come in. Some of the common issues with wisdom teeth include:

  • The teeth become impacted (unable to break through the gums) because your jaw is not big enough to accommodate the teeth.
  • Infection may occur where a wisdom tooth has come through the gums part-way, creating a space where food gets stuck. Gums become swollen and painful.
  • Impacted teeth can also cause infection or damage to other teeth and bone.
  • Wisdom teeth often come in at an irregular angle which can force other teeth to make room, causing issues with your bite or smile.

If the doctors at Health Centered Dentistry perform extraction of one or more of your wisdom teeth, know that you will be as comfortable as possible during the procedure. Local anesthetic is used at the site of the surgery and oral and IV sedation is available to help you rest comfortably (and even sleep!) through the procedure.

Gum grafting

If you are an Anchorage Alaska resident who is experiencing gum recession, the doctors at Health Centered Dentistry can help prevent further damage with surgical gum grafting. Gum grafting is a routine procedure to help those whose natural gums have thinned and receded, exposing the tooth root. When roots are exposed there is greater sensitivity to hot and cold as well as greater risk of gum disease. If left untreated, the bone beneath will be exposed and can lead to tooth loss.

A typical procedure includes the removal of tissue from the roof of the mouth, which is then grafted to the gums. The grafted tissue reinforces the natural gums and can both prevent further recession, and protect the patient from the advancement of disease. For your comfort, the doctors will be sure you are comfortably asleep during the process. If you have receding or infected gums, let the doctors take a look and see if grafting may be a solution for you.

Bone grafting

Gum disease is the leading cause of bone loss in the mouth.  Fortunately, the doctors at Health Centered Dentistry can help prevent damage and promote the regrowth of natural bone, through a procedure called bone grafting. Bone grafting may be needed to create a stable base for dental implant placement, to stop the progression of gum disease, or to make your smile more balanced and looking its best. Bone is usually harvested from the patient (either from the mouth or elsewhere in the body). Bone used in oral procedures may also be bovine or synthetic.  There are many reasons why a patient may need a bone graft to restore the jaw bone. Some of the more common are:

  • To support dental implants
  • To augment the ridge in the case of severe periodontal disease, trauma, or birth defect
  • To reposition a nerve during an implant procedure
