Many Anchorage, Alaska residents are nervous about visiting the dentist. There are varying levels of fear or anxiety, some find it unbearable to set foot in a dental office, while others avoid the dentist until an emergency occurs. If you are someone who has some level of anxiety about the dentist, know that the doctors at Health Centered Dentistry take your concern seriously, and are prepared to help you receive the care you need, comfortably.
In recent years, dental procedures and technology have advanced significantly; modern dentistry is much different than what you may have experienced as a child. However, if the sounds, smells, and thought of needles are too overwhelming, we understand. That is why we offer two types of sedation for our patients.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is where your dentist provides medication in order to lesson anxiety or fear during dental procedures.
The levels of sedation include:
- Minimal sedation – you are awake but relaxed.
- Moderate sedation (formerly called “conscious sedation”) – you may not remember much of the procedure.
- Deep sedation – you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.
- General anesthesia – you are completely unconscious.
What are my options for sedation at Health Centered Dentistry?
At Health Centered Dentistry, we can provide you a prescription pill to take about an hour before your procedure. The medication is a mild sedative that will likely make you drowsy, but remain awake. A larger dose may be given to produce moderate sedation. If this is the better fit for you, the level of sedation will make you feel groggy and you may even fall asleep during the procedure. Most people have a blurred memory of the procedure and find sedation to help tremendously with their anxiety.
For IV sedation, you receive the sedative drug through a vein, so it goes to work more quickly than the oral sedation. This method allows the dentist to continually adjust the level of sedation during the procedure.
