When a Toothache is Not a Toothache

Most of us in Anchorage have experienced a toothache. At their mildest, toothaches may cause just enough discomfort to get on your nerves and disrupt your concentration, but at their worst, they can be debilitating. Because the pain feels like it’s coming from your tooth, it’s natural to assume that all toothaches are caused by cavities, gum disease or some other tooth-related problem. However, Drs. Henrie, Marchant, Bragiel, and Madsen would like you to know that not all toothaches are related to your teeth.

Wait, what? Toothaches that have nothing to do with teeth? Yes– as anyone at Health Centered Dentistry will tell you –it is possible and it does happen. That being said, most toothaches are tooth-related.

How can a toothache not come from your tooth?

Your mouth is a complex organ that contains a number of different types of tissue, nerves, and microorganisms. While run of the mill dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease are responsible for the majority of toothaches, there are many other conditions that can cause localized pain in one of more teeth –and some of them have nothing to do with your teeth. Here are a few examples:

Bruxism & Headaches

You may not be aware of it, but everyone clenches and grinds their teeth at some point, to some degree. It’s a natural reaction to stress. During the day, you might catch yourself doing it and consciously stop, but during the night you are unaware of it and will naturally grind much harder. Unfortunately, some people in Anchorage have such problems with bruxism that they may experience: Read more ›

Skin Cancer Protection: Don’t Forget Your Lips!

Lips__Skin_Cancer (1)We know that our patients are smart and you all lather yourself and your loved ones in sunscreen anytime you go out in the Anchorage summer sun. You wear your sunglasses, and maybe even a wide-brimmed hat. But do you protect your lips?

Your lips are very sensitive parts of your skin, and you can get skin cancer there just like any other exposed part of your body. At Health Centered Dentistry, we want to make sure everyone is taking proper care of their health and has all the knowledge they need to do so. As always, call us if you have any questions or concerns!

Why You Should Protect Your Lips

The outer layer of your lips is much thinner than that of the rest of your skin. They also have almost no melanin, the pigment in skin that naturally helps screen out the harmful rays of the sun. This is why lips rarely tan, but easily burn.

Lips get a lot of sun exposure, being on your face and all, and are rarely covered. Prolonged sun damage on and around your lips leads to those fine lines and wrinkles that no one wants, as well as some more serious conditions.

The Big Deal with Sun Damage

Is Holistic Dentistry Right for Me?

HolisticCurrently a hot topic of debate among dental and healthcare professionals, holistic dentistry has gained popularity in recent years, alongside the movement toward naturopathic medicine. Dr. Henrie, Dr. Marchant, Dr. Bragiel & Dr. Madsen at Health Centered Dentistry want Anchorage residents to understand the differences between the two approaches to dentistry, in order to make the most informed decision when choosing a dental health professional.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic dentistry is an approach to dental care that focuses on promoting overall health and wellness, rather than the treatment of specific disease. This practice places dental problems in the context of health issues elsewhere in the body, analyzing the patient’s entire physical, emotional, and even spiritual health. Read more ›
